Flavor Paper's Jon Sherman is the Willy Wonka of wallpaper. From prints with Grand Prix race cars to trompe I'oeil chandeliers, his hand-screened and digital wall coverings stretch the boundaries of imagination. (While the company doesn't offer the lickable wallpaper seen in the 1971 movie, it does make a scratch 'n' sniff variety that smells like fruit.) And if Sherman is the candy man, then Flavor Paper's Brooklyn headquarters (or "the Flavor Lair") is his chocolate factory. Like Wonka's wonderland. Flavor Paper is full of surprises, including a five-story tall neon sculpture in the stairwell, a black light elevator and a psychedelic corridor that recalls Wonka's shrinking hallway. Similarly, not everything is as it seems. Architect Jeff Kovet, principal of Skylab Architecture, Portland, OR, thoughtfully positioned mirrored and glass surfaces to create optical illusions throughout the space. For example, the Manhattan skyline is visible at the entrance thanks to periscope-style mirrors on the rooftop that transmit the image down to street level.
