When Indianapolis Colts' football coach-rony Dungy retired in January, much of the talk about his legacy focused not on his team's victory in Super Bowl XLI, but on his coaching "tree." In football speak, the tree (and its branches) represents all the head coaches whose career growth can be traced back to one person. Dungy's tree features no fewer than a half-dozen current and former NFL coaches. The tree is rooted in guidance, mentoring and laying the groundwork for the next generation. Our coaching tree grew in Savannah, GA, in the form of the Young Professionals Scholarship Fund. Started in 2007 by IES president Kevin Flynn, the fund supports the attendance of students and emerging professionals at IES Annual Conferences. Four of these up-and-comers attended the conference in Savannah and their impressions appear in this issue (p. 126). A common theme-the importance of mentoring.
