"Cold but not too cold" … The weather in the Orkneys early one Friday morning this past August suited us for the operation we were embarking upon. Over the next few days my colleagues and I would be supervising the commercial transfer of an LNG cargo between two floating vessels in Orkney waters. Of course, "cold" takes on a whole new meaning when considering the -162℃ carriage temperature of the cryogenic liquid cargo about to be transshipped. As we watched our jumbo 4.5m-wide, 6m-long fenders being lifted from their secure dry storage location on a farm in the Orkney Islands, the weather forecast looked good and the advance planning was falling into place. Low temperatures can be expected in the Orkneys, situated to the north of the Scottish mainland, even in August.
