I had been to Rhodesia a couple of times before and loved every minute of it. The country still exuded British colonialism, but was tempered by modern times and had no apartheid. The weather was superb. The food was great; the steaks and 'Lion' beer were awesome, especially if consumed at one of the frequent barbecue 'brais'! And the steam engines were amazing. On my first trip, I even had a footplate ride on the North line from Bulawayo towards the Falls on one of the classic 15th Class 4-6-4+4-6-4 express Garratts when the driver turned out originally to have worked at Saltley shed near my home in Birmingham!
