The year was 1948, the world was slowly recovering from the effects of WWII. On the railways of North America steam was entering its last few years, elsewhere there were a few more years to go. British Railways had just come into being in the UK, which would lead to the largely technically uninteresting BR Standards whilst in mainland Europe steam production was still in full swing. Meanwhile in Argentina, then a comparatively wealthy and successful country, a young civil engineer who also happened to be a qualified locomotive fireman and driver was embarking on a ground breaking locomotive project which even today would look radical in many ways. The engineer was none other than the now legendary Ing. Livio Dante Porta and the locomotive in question is the machine that has become known the world over as 'Argentina'.
