In LI/73, Shaun McMahon's article "Linking the Atlantic with the Pacific by Narrow Gauge" brought up the subject of Transandine Railways between Argentina and Chile. One currently operates, another might be resuscitated and others are at least being talked about. The current status is as follows. This railway was completed in 1948, after the lengthy gestation period common to all Transandine railways. From Antofagasta to Augusta Victoria, it incorporates a pre-existing line dating from the days of the nitrate boom, belonging to the Antofagasta Railway Company (popularly known as the FCAB), part of Antofagasta P.L.C. The continuation to the border belongs to the Empresa de Transporte Ferroviario (popularly known as Ferronor), now wholly onwed by Andres Pirrazoli S.A. The Argentinian section is part of the network of Belgrano Cargas, which is currently in the process of being re-tendered.
