This year we are celebrating Trevithick's contribution to railways. Although events have been billed as the 'Rail Bicentenary', railways go back a lot further than 200 years and what we are really celebrating is 200 years of railway locomotion. For Richard Trevithick though, this was only a small part of his contribution to the development of steam, and indeed he had already proved the principal of locomotion on the road with his 1801 'Puffing Devil' road locomotive. Neither this, nor the Penydarren locomotive were created solely for transport, but were intended to be adaptable for other uses where steam power was required, while also being able to move under their own power from one place to another. Indeed, after its few trial runs, breaking numerous cast iron rails, the Penydarren loco was retired from wagon haulage and spent its lifetime as a stationary engine at the iron works. The idea of locomotion for transport was followed through by Trevithick and he demonstrated his 'Catch-me-who-can' 0-4-0 pulling passenger coaches on a circle of track near Euston in London. This was a much simpler machine, not being required to perform other stationary duties. It was followed up with a steam-powered road carriage that terrified residents of the city with its noise, steam and poor steering control!
