Aviation is becoming ever more data driven, or, rather, it is collecting ever larger amounts of data as automatic recording becomes more and more common. As the data lake grows ever deeper, it is clear that analysing the numbers and turning them into useful information is beyond the scope of simple human intervention. Instead, engineers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to help. One of the leading applications is preventative maintenance, with systems such as Skywise from Airbus and AVIATAR from Lufthansa Technik. Early adopters like easyJet and Etihad Airways have made significant cost savings as components showing a deterioration in performance are removed and sent for repair, rather than waiting for a hard failure that is not only expensive to fix but also puts an aircraft at risk of grounding, with greater financial penalties.
