First, a confession: I am a card-carrying member of SAE International. I've worked in the automotive/oil industry for over 50 years, and I am surprised (but not too often) at some of the questions and comments I hear on the subject of automotive engine oils. Many are from consumers seeking to understand the needs of an engine, oil-wise. However, queries also come from people who are involved in the automotive business and are members of SAE. Recently, SAE has begun an Open Forum on its website with an invitation for members to ask questions and make comments about topics of the day. One of the hot topics is autonomous vehicles; lots of back-and-forth on that subject, which I'll leave for another time. My interest today is with the questions on engine oil.
