The first powered trains were developed in England in the early 19th century and quickly embraced in North America. According to Christian Wolmar in his book "The Great Railroad Revolution," the first real railways in the United States were the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O), with 132 miles of track completed in 1830, and South Carolina's Charleston & Hamburg, completed in 1833- By 1860, railroads such as the B&O and Pennsylvania had linked many states with over 30,000 miles of track.
