Surveys once showed that top executive positions produced less stress on incumbents than on their subordinates. The theory, partially borne out in fact, was that those giving the orders were better able to control their own universe, but that subordinates, unfortunately, could not. Hence, there were more anxiety-produced medical and emotional problems for those further down the ladder, while happy CEOs basked comfortably in their own tranquil environment. That might have been true once, but it is certainly not true now.
