Traction behaviour of some different polyalkylmethacrylates (PAMA) solutions in polyalphaolefin was studied with a disk on roller type EHL tester. Experiments were conducted under the slide/roll ratio of 50%, a mean rolling speed between 0.004 and lm/s, and a temperature of 40C. When the coefficients of traction μ were plotted against the rolling speed U, the measurements of all the polymer solutions fell on the line for the base oil under the rolling speed above 0.2m/s. Under the rolling speed below 0.2m/s, the traction behaviour depended on the type of polymer. That is, as the rolling speed was further decreased, μ for high molecular weight polymer more gradually increased than that for the base oil, while μ for the low molecular weight polymers first deviated downwards from the base oil line, and then it increased again. Such traction behaviour can be explained in the variation in the traction with film parameter Λ. That is, low traction of polymer solutions compared to that of the base oil line was due to the increase in the film parameter. This tendency was the most significant for high molecular weight PAMA solution. On the other hand, μ for polymer solutions was also influenced by the mutual interaction k_M of polymer molecules in the partial EHL region including thin film lubrication.
