Smartly dressed in white and grey, the C4380 is the most Mac-like of all the printers here, and that even extends to the software. It's also noticeably smaller than its rivals, and includes WiFi and PictBridge support that the Canon Pixma MP610 lacks. That compact footprint has to be paid for somewhere, which is why the C4380 has a combined input/output tray out front capable of holding a maximum of 125 sheets input, but only 50 out. Build quality is good, although the swing-out rest for printer output doesn't look very robust. The C4380 also sacrifices on printer functionality by limiting controls to cryptic-looking copying and setup buttons, plus a yellow backlit LCD. This forces you to do most of your tweaking using the supplied HP software, but this is suitably Mac-like, if over-complex. The C4380 produced decent prints. Mono prints tend to come out dark grey rather thank black, though, and print speeds are noticeably slower than with the Canon. Fast normal mode gave us a single mono print in 19 seconds; 10 pages hit the output tray in 1 minute 39 seconds. There's no duplex unit for two-sided printing.
