We're a step closer to having kill-switch technology built into our smartphones by default, after the California State Senate approved a bill that would mandate preinstalla-tion of the antitheft feature on phones sold in the Golden State. The legislation, put forward by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), needed 21 votes for approval, and 26 state senators backed it. The bill heads next to the State Assembly. The vote marked a reversal of fortune for Leno's kill-switch proposal, which failed to win enough votes for approval when it came before the Senate in April . But the bill underwent a few tweaks, and recently Apple and Microsoft dropped their objections to it. The CTIA, the wireless industry's lobbying arm, remains opposed.
