PET is melt spun in two ways- one by melting the dried chips in an extruder,secondly by feeding the polymer melt to an extruded directly from a polymerization reactor.In the later case,melt is suitable for spinning directly without any preparation.However,for the chips route,the chips need to be prepared by drying them thoroughly to achieve a moisture of 0.004 wt.%• Higher moisture leads to depolymerization,due to reverse polycondensation reaction (i.e.Hydrolysis).This occurs when the polymer chips are in molten form in the extruder and the rest of the spinning line till the spin pack.The chips are dried in a vertical column of hot air,in which the chips are filled from the top and they slowly move down,while dry hot air moves up in a counter flow direction.The present paper deals with the moisture management of chips and their allied effect the properties of processed filament.
