It's Festivities galore everywhere and will continue till the end of the year or shall we say the beginning of next year! The first half of the month saw the Janmashtmi and Govinda festival, a festival which ends on a sad note, more often than not. This year too there are reports of few fatalities and a score of casualties. Inspite of the availability of all types of protective gears, people ignore the safety measures and the result is very miserable. Mumbaikars, as well as the rest of the country are all set to welcome Ganpati Bappa, even if it pinches their pocket a little more this year. With the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax this July, key materials used to mould Ganesh idols like Plaster of Paris, Paints and Varnishes have become more expensive. Plaster of Paris and Paints and varnishes now attract GST of 18 and 28 %, respectively. Yet the devotees are not ready to compromise on the grandiosity of the celebration. With clay idols exempted from GST, we are likely to see more eco-friendly Ganeshas. Out of the 300 orders received this year by a repute idol maker, over 100 are for idols made of clay. This is almost double in comparison to last year. While many are opting for eco-friendly decorations and pandals, most of them will also opt for unique themes and designs. Most of the designs are made using paper, cardboard, fabric and acrylic colours.
