Studies have shown that seam appearance as well as performance depends on the interrelationship of fabrics, threads, and the stitch density/seam selection and lastly on the sewing conditions, which include the needle size, needle thread tension, and the appropriate operation and maintenance of the sewing machine. Knowledge of the relation between sewing thread and mechanical properties and seam quality is essential for apparel manufacturer for the prediction of sewing thread mechanical properties, as related to the required properties of high seam quality. The type of seam used and the selection of seam play a major role in the garment durability especially for the fashionable denim garments, even though their contribution may not be reflected in terms of cost and quality. Some types of sewing are more complex in the requirements for threads because they require decorative as well as practical sewing techniques. The properties of the sewing threads determine how compatible it will be with the fabric. A high quality sewing thread that is uniform in its characteristics and dimensions can be used on a variety of machines and with a variety of fabrics. There are large number of tests available for assessing the quality of sewing threads and the most common tests conducted by the manufacturers and users are physical and fastness properties. A sewing thread must have a good sewability and be capable of properly joining the two materials together and must be durable.
