Shear Thickening Fluids (STFs) reflect unique behaviour of very high viscosity at higher shear rates. Because of this unique behaviour they are considered potential candidate materials for liquid body armour, sporting protective clothing and other applications. Recently, research and development in the field of shear thickening fluids (STFs) has shown a new route of reducing weight of the armour protective vaste by way of reinforcing the base fabric. Herein shear thickening mechanisms, ingredient materials, development methods, rheological properties, and factors influencing shear thickening behaviour have been reviewed. Basic models used to describe shear thickening behavior are also discussed. Recent advances, including the effects of particle surface properties, relationship to carrier fluids and electric or magnetic fields applied on the transition of STFs are included in the review. Application of STFs in Armour protection is also reviewed.
