This paper describes the prerequisites of sportswear explaining the diverse requirements of individual sportswear. Protection, comfort and shape retention are the three basic aspects involved in designing sportswear. For hot and humid climatic conditions in India, the sportswear must remove perspiration rapidly from the skin and keep the body cool. The work carried out by scientists at SASMIRA in developing appropriate sportswear is also described in this paper. This includes the breathability i.e. permeability involving wicking properties, sorption, spreading and evaporation properties of different fabric configuration with and without chemical treatments. On the basis of this work, a twin layer sportswear was designed which has inner layer of polyester and outer layer of specially treated viscose. This sportswear was evaluated by field trials during a sporting event at a school in Mumbai during the hot and humid period. These trials indicated that the sportswear was successful in keeping the participants cool and dry during the peak athletic activity in hot and humid climatic conditions. Simultaneously, the reverse twin layer (viscose inside and polyester outside) sportswear was also evaluated. Though not as effective as the normal one, this also kept the participants cool and dry compared to those using 100% cotton shirts.
