How Washing and Finishing Control Fabric Handle - A Case Study

Washing is one of the routine process to which the dress materials or fabrics are subjected to during wear or usage. The fabric properties do change following successive washings. Three groups of fabrics namely Group Ⅰ - Commercial long cloths Group-Ⅱ laboratory woven Jute/Silk fabrics and Group Ⅲ laboratory woven Polyester/viscose fabrics were subjected to multiple washings. In the case of Group Ⅰ, fabrics were peach finished. The results have shown that for the first three successive washes the properties like tensile, bending and shear have shown enormous changes following washing by registering a decreasing trend, however the properties changed from positive to negative side following increase in successive number of washings from 3 to 10. The response of Dyed long cloth is different from bleached long cloth for washing. Jute/silk fabrics on the other hand found influenced by the softening action due to washing tend to follow the trend similar to Group-Ⅰ. Peach finished Group Ⅲ samples exhibited a larger deviation in tensile, bending and shear properties than control samples.
