Breaking extension shows good correlation with orientation angle indicating that despiralling occurs during tensile loading. Tensile strength of banana fibres seems to show significant differences between thick and thin strands in those varieties with low microfi-brillar angle. Tensile strength of different varieties could be related to structural properties. Tenacity of fibres is predictable with reasonable accuracy if cellulose content and microfi-brillar angle are known. The banana fibre is resistant to the action of alkali, phenol, formic acid, chloroform acetone and petroleum ether. It is soluble in hot concentrated H_2SO_4. Similarly, the values observed for cold water soluble and 1% NaOH soluble compounds are also in close proximity to the reported values. It was also observed that jute and hemp contain higher percentage of lignin as compared to banana fibre because all the two give bright red colour in comparison to pink to orange colour observed for banana fibre.
