This Special Issue of The Manchester School on 'Regional and Spatial Economics' addresses issues related to the determinants of spatial economic disparities. Six papers have been included with a balance between theory and empirics. The papers as a group highlight the importance of the behavior of economic agents and market integration in shaping the regional economic landscape. Starting with a contribution on the theoretical robustness of monopolistic competition, the building block of most analysis in the field, the special issue presents formal discussions of the impact of international market integration on the regional development within a country and on the behavior of multinational firms. It then turns to the empirical study of the regional implications of the increased competition caused by market integration and on its implications about countries' development processes. It finally offers an empirical study of the business cycle synchronization at the regional level. The special issue aims to contribute to the vast regional and spatial economics literature. This literature has traditionally focused on the determinants of industry location and, since two decades, has moved toward the new economic geography paradigm. It is therefore no surprise to see this approach emerging in many contributions of this Special Issue. In the following, I wish to outline the internal coherence of the Special Issue by highlighting each author's main contribution.
