On 24 may 2004, shattered, dehydrated and a little nervous about how he was going to get down again, Paul Deegan stood on the summit of Mount Everest. At an altitude of 8,850 metres you can see the plains of Tibet, the curvature of the earth, the horizons rolling into the distance in every direction. This crowning moment of success was the culmination of nearly two decades of planning, strategy, budgeting, training, networking, heartache and sheer graft. Deegan, a hardened mountain climber and expedition leader, first visited the Himalayas in 1988, and has been back five times since.
