摘要

We have read with interest the comments of Fritsch and Karampelas on our paper entitled "Determination of canthaxanthin in the red coral (Corallium rubrum) from Marseille by HPLC combined with UV and MS detection". The authors show yet unpublished results that they have obtained by Raman spectroscopy on a non-demineralized skeleton of Corallium rubrum. They conclude that "a mixture of 'unsubstituted polyenes' is the most probable cause for the colour of C. rubrum from Marseille or elsewhere". In our paper we used a totally different approach, since we extracted the pigments present within the mineral fraction by decalcifying the axial skeleton and spicules instead of studying the crude skeleton by Raman spectroscopy. We then performed chemical analyses of organic molecules extracted by HPLC combined with UV and MS detection, which is an established reference technique commonly used for the analysis of carotenoids in marine organisms.
