In the new era of marine research, namely that devoted to studying impacted ecosystems, one major focus is on finding natural or near-natural systems as comparative, pre-disturbance benchmarks. The search for such reference habitats is confounded by the shifting baseline syndrome, in which successive generations of marine scientists, and the public, mistakenly come to accept increasingly less natural systems as their gold standards. The problem is particularly acute in coastal ecosystems -the sites of the greatest anthropogenically induced changes in the marine environment.
