摘要

Over the last 20 years, geographic information systems (GIS) have increased their presence as tools to understand and manage coastal and marine environments. Nevertheless, challenges of data acquisition, and oceans' intrinsic 3D and dynamic nature are just some of the areas for which the coastal and marine environment requires particular attention when applying GIS. This special issue on Marine and Coastal Geographic Information Systems, which grew from CoastGIS 2013, the 11th International Symposium for GIS and Computer Cartography for Coastal Zone Management held in Victoria, Canada in June 2013, provides such attention. The eight papers assembled for this special issue address a variety of challenges from standardizing marine place names and boundaries, to modeling movement patterns of marine vessels, meaningfully generalizing or modeling complex information about the coastline, bathymetry and water column, assessing uncertainty in slope calculations, modeling coastal vulnerability to storms and, finally, delineating more accurately sea-level rise inundations in coastal environments.
