The historical account of a difficult period is undoubtedly engaging and emotional. The ship, Jeanie Johnston, has been beautifully weaved into the story as a character during the time of Irish Potato Famine. The demise of thousands of people in the famine was a tragedy that Miles has brought to light in a unique way. Through her astounding talent for storytelling, Miles has provided an understanding of this humanitarian crisis that was deeply rooted in social, economic, political, and ideological causes and pressures.
