Effect of particle concentration on property of electrodeposited Ni-ZrC nanocomposites

To investigate the effect of incorporated ZrC particles on the structure and properties of Ni-ZrC nanocomposite coatings, nanocomposites of nickel and ZrC were produced by electrodeposition from a nickel sulphate bath containing different concentrations of ZrC nanoparticles. The Ni-ZrC nanocomposites were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis respectively. In addition, hardness and the corrosion behaviour were studied by Vicker microhardness tester and potentiodynamic polarisation technique respectively. The results show that the addition of ZrC nanoparticles into the electrolyte changed the morphology of the obtained coatings violently. The volume fraction of ZrC in coating was increased along with the ZrC nanoparticles concentration in the electrolyte from 2 to 20 gL(-1). By increasing the content of ZrC, the crystal face (200) preferred orientation was depressed, and the grain size of the coatings was reduced. The hardness and the corrosion resistance of the Ni-ZrC nanocomposite coatings are both improved compared to those of pure Ni coating under the experimental conditions.
