Toughening silica glass by imparting ductility using a small amount of silver nanoparticles

摘要

Imparting ductility to glass effectively counters brittleness caused by stress concentration. Spark plasma sintering of silica (SiO_2) nanopowder and a silver nitrate mixture successfully dispersed silver (Ag) nanoparticles into a SiO_2 glass matrix. The Ag-precipitated SiO_2 glass showed crack bridging during crack propagation and softening owing to the ductility imparted by Ag. Compared with SiO_2 glass, Ag-precipitated SiO_2 glass exhibited fewer cone cracks and suppressed radial crack propagation, resulting in a significantly improved fracture toughness (2.01 ± 0.2 MParn~(1/2) for Ag-precipitated SiO_2).
