In the present study, the influence of the crystalline structure of Fe_2O_(3(amorphous)) @TiO_2, α-Fe_2O_3@TiO_2 and α-Fe_2O_3 @ SiO_2 @TiO_2 nanocomposites on the NIR-reflectance and photocatalytic properties have been investigated. The nano-sized α-Fe_2O_3, SiO_2 and TiO_2 were prepared via co-precipitation, Stober and sol-gel methods, respectively. The photocatalytic performance of the nanoparticles was examined by the photodegradation of Acid Red18 under UV irradiation after 120 min of reaction. NIR-diffuse reflectance and colorimetric parameters were measured. The results showed that the TiO_2 coating has considerably enhanced the photocatalytic activity and the NIR-reflectance. Fe_2O_(3(amorphous)) @TiO_2 nanocomposite possesses the highest NIR- reflection and α-Fe_2O_3 @TiO_2 reveals the maximum photocatalytic degradation. Silica coating in the α-Fe_2O_3@SiO_2@TiO_2 nanocomposite has been boosted both of the NIR-reflectance and photocatalytic degradation to their maximum level. As a result, this multipurpose composite is suitable to be simultaneously developed for both photocatalytic and cool pigment applications.
