摘要

The variable-complexity shape optimisation of a model yacht hull to maximise the hydrodynamic performance of the vessel is presented. The performance measure considered is the wave resistance of the hull and this is reduced subject to practical design constraints. During the early stages of the design optimisation, a relatively crude method of calculating the performance measure, this-ship theory, is used. As the design optimisation nears its conclusion, this is replaced by a more detailed panel method calculation. This variable-complexity optimisation has the advantage of improving the performance of the design space search.
