In this paper, a discretisation-oriented describing function is obtained for non-linear devices that consist of a combination of backlash and quantisation (resolution) while being subject to discretisation through a sampler and zero-order hold. Such a describing function is frequency- dependent so that the overall non-linearity, which includes both resolution and backlash, is interpreted as one possessing non-linear inertia so that its associate critical locus is also frequency-dependent. This non-linear inertia is generated by the sampling process since it does not appear if the system is Continuous. The presence of non-linear sustained oscillations (limit cycles) is investigated through Simulated comparative examples.
