摘要

The article presents a method of calculating the maximum temperature rise when a substance is irradiated by a focussed laser. Bounding solutions, associated with (a) an insulated surface and (b) a surface maintained at environmental temperature, are compared and discussed with reference to commonly used engineering approximations. The analytic solutions are constructed, using the method of images, to give series solutions based on well known results for heat conduction in terms of Bessel functions.
