This paper examines the steady-state thermal boundary layer induced in a rotating cylinder which is subject to surface heat input of uniform intensity and convective surface cooling. A closed-form asymptotic solution for the temperature field is derived for large Peclet numbers. A further examination establishes the parametric dependence of the cooling effectiveness on the Peclet and Biot numbers, and the cooling configuration (heating angle, cooling location and contact angles). The configurations which give maximum cooling effectiveness for various cooling conditions are discussed. The analysis is then extended to examine multi-zone cooling. Expressions for the temperature field are derived, and a comparison of the cooling effectiveness of multi-zone cooling with that of single-zone cooling is made.
