The introduction of the concept of path derivatives in 1984 and a new area of research begun about 1994 have made the previous survey articles on Peano differentiation obsolete. The purpose of this survey article is to present the classical results about the Peano derivative of a function defined on an interval via path derivatives and to discuss recent developments concerning the Peano derivative of a function defined on a closed set.
