Some of you might recall the Wendy's commercial where the little old lady is given a big bun with a small burger and in shock exclaims "where's the beef?" This line was then picked up in the 1984 U.S. presidential primaries by Waller Mondale to suggest that rival Gary Hart's ideas were lopsided on the side of too little substance. In this commentary I ask the analogous question, "where's the psychology?" Not because the authors of the focus article "Unique Characteristics of Diagnostic Classification Models: A Comprehensive Review of the Current State-of-the-Art" have not provided a solid review of the technical aspects of Diagnostic Classification Models (DCM), but because a discussion of a fundamental aspect of DCM seems to be missing-the role of psychology.
