Tabulation of the US Dept. of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) enforcement actions clearly indicate that problems with stunning cattle is the most common reason given for plant suspensions. In some cases, reflexive kicking is mistaken for a return to sensibility. A new study by French researchers Claudio Terlouw and colleagues clearly shows that leg movements are not associated with return to sensibility. To prove their theory, cattle were examined after captive-bolt stunning. The experimental treatments included: 1) normal stunning and hoisting 2) severing the spine after stunning.
