摘要

Remote sensing with infrared and other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum is a very useful and very powerful tool. Global climate monitoring, police surveillance, and even searches for land mines use infrared to gather vital information for solid planning and decisive action. Yet remote sensing of temperature remains difficult because of the inadequate methods currently available for determining surface emissivity. Surfaces can be characterized in a laboratory environment to provide more-accurate emissivity values in a library of materials for field use, and work is continuing to determine surface emissivity with remote sensing. Such efforts form the basis of a patented engineering solution to this measurement problem. (See "Using Thermal Images to Measure Temperature," June 1987.)
