摘要

The u.s. marines' new landing craft, the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV), is designed to carry a squad of 18 Marines plus a crew of three at speeds of more than 20 knots in rough water and 45 miles per hour on land. In the water, the hull design, called a planing brick because of its weight and shape, requires a large amount of power to achieve planing speeds. The craft is powered by a diesel engine with more than 2,000 horsepower that drives a water-jet propulsion system for water use and a high-mobility track-laying suspension system on land. The vehicle, currently entering development, is expected to be ready for field use by 2006.
