After five decades of dedication, devotion to his chosen technical specialisation of signal analysis and interpretation, Simon Braun leaves behind legacy rich in technical advances and widespread promulgation of all aspects of his subject. He also leaves a community of students and followers who will continue to enrich the subject he made his own. Simon's legacy embraces the foundation of the subjects of modern signal processing, condition monitoring and the systematic application to many branches of engineering with the overall result of great improvements in reliability, efficiency and safety across many engineering domains. His contributions are enshrined in a number of key works - a seminal textbook introducing the primary subject and its practical applications, a unique 3-volume encyclopaedia covering the whole field of vibration and - perhaps the most profound contribution of all - a Journal which he founded almost singlehandedly some 35 years ago, which remains pre-eminent in the field, world-wide. In many ways, his greatest legacy is an international community of practitioners, most of whom were introduced to the subject either directly by Simon himself - usually with great enthusiasm or passion - or, indirectly, by exposure to his many publications and courses. Many of these practitioners have today sought to capture some of the ways in which Simon has influenced their lives, personally, and inspired them to develop their own careers in the field. A number of these very personal recollections and reflections are presented here as a token of the esteem of his many colleagues and students at the time of his passing.
