Rotor Dynamics (shortly called Rotordynamics) is an important branch of dynamics of mechanical systems that deals with the behavior of rotating machines, which range from micro-scale up to the macro-scale where also large systems like power plant turbo-generators are analyzed. The history of Rotordynamics starts probably with the analysis of Rankine (1869), development was initially rather slow, but in the last 5 decades research and technologies grew dramatically. The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) draw in 1974 the state of art in Rotordynamics in a Symposium in Lyngby (Denmark). Some years later the Rotordynamic scientific community started to meet regularly mainly in two International Conferences: the IFTOMM Rotordynamics Conference, which was held every four years each time in a different country all over the world, and the "Vibrations in Rotating Machinery" (VIRM) International Conference organized by IMECHE in UK every four years but shifted by two years with respect to the IFTOMM Conference.
