El artículo aborda los datos epidemiológicos recientes sobre el impacto social de la infección por VIH/SIDA, así como los principales avances en la investigación científica en esta área tales como: la mejor comprensión de la patogénesis de la infección por VIH, la disponibilidad de estudios cuantitativos capaces de determinar el RNA del VIH en plasma y la disponibilidad de agentes antiretrovirales más eficaces. También demuestra la excelente respuesta clínica a combinaciones farmacológicas que incluyen inhibidores de proteasas, 3TC y AZT, misma que se caracteriza por la disminución de la carga viral hasta niveles indetectables y aumento en el número de células CD4 en plasma.%This article addresses epidemiological data on the social impact ofHIV/AIDS infection, as well as the most important advances in scientific research in the field, such as: better comprehension of pathogenesis on HIV infection, the availability of quatitative studies able to determine the RNA of VIH in plasma and the availability of more efficacious antiretroviral agents. It also demonstrates the excellent clinical results from the drug combinations which include protease inhibitors, 3TC and AZT, characterized by the reduction of ha viral load to undetectable levels and the increase of the number of CD4 cells in plasm.
