One-dimensional Wireless Sensor Networks are becoming of interest due to the surveillance they can provide in tunnels, railroads or electrical installations. In this kind of network, the energy hole problem is also present When this problem occurs, energy depletion experienced by some nodes prevents the whole network from operating. Thus, the network becomes useless. This paper aims at providing a model that allows identifying the nodes that consume their energy resources earlier in time and that are responsible for this premature network disruption. The paper develops an analytical model to characterize the traffic load in every node in the network. This parameter provides a valid indicator of the energy consumption that occurs in each network node. In contrast to previous work, a shortest-path routing protocol is assumed in the network, instead of a geographical and greedy routing approach. The developed model has been validated by means of simulation. Both model and simulation show that the nodes closer to the limit of the sink's coverage area are the first to deplete their batteries.
