A new coherent receiver based on an optical PLL has been investigated in this paper. An additional optical phase modulation to VCO laser is incorporated for negative feedback to cancel the phase error alongwith the relaxation of lasers linewidth requirements and also to enhance dynamic stability of the system. Theoretical analysis have been made to obtain the transfer function, error function and phase error variance in terms of line-width requirement and loop stability. The investigation of receiver performance shows that the limitation of stringent lasers linewidth requirement has been relaxed upto 2MHz and phase error reduces by 0.015rad~2 for a typical system with phase modulation sensitivity 4×10~(-10) rad/V. Thus, commercially available DFB lasers (linewidth 10-50 MHz) will be hooked up in this scheme successfully in practical system.
