A European research project has been launched for the development of lignin-bases carbon fibers for use in composite fiber materials, in the form of a private-public partnership (PPP). The aim of the so-called LIBRE Project (Lignin-Based Carbon Fibers for Composites) is the development of new, bio-based raw materials for highly stable carbon fiber composites out of lignin derived from pulp and paper manufacture. Along with other companies and research institutes from all over Europe, the Institute of Textile Chemistry and Chemical Fibers (ITCF), Denkendorf/ Germany, is participating in the project.
