In the first 6 months of 2012 Tajikistan increased cotton processing to 5,300 tons, a rise of 1,100 tons compared to the same period 2011, according to the Ministry of Energy and Industry. The increase was mainly due to the expansion of production. The Ministry of Agriculture predicts that around 420,000 tons of cotton will be harvested in 2012 with up to 90 % of cotton fiber being exported mainly to Turkey, Iran, Russia and Latvia. Tajikistan has a total processing capacity for cotton fiber of 100,000 tons/year, but the industry is extremely under-utilized with only 10,000 tons expected to be processed domestically this year.
