In 2009/10 almost 22 million tons cotton were produced and 24.6 million tons were consumed. The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Washington/USA, estimates an increase of production to 27.3 million tons in 2011/12. Increased cotton production may be achieved either by expanding planted area or by increasing production/unit area. ICAC expects that the 2010/11 yield will improve to 759 kg/ha (+4.5%).
