In textile finishing it often happens that after processing or handling of the fabric, a rather nasty and previously undiscovered fault comes to light (Fig. 1). It is then a question of who or what is to blame. Was the gray cloth already defective on receipt or did the fault arise during the finishing process. Ultimately the finisher has no alternative but to reject the fabric and try again.rnTo help prevent such scenarios, an attempt will usually be made beforehand to improve quality control, even at considerable expense in terms of finance and personnel. In other words, a visual check with the naked eye. However the latter is not quick enough so the fabric must be run very slowly. Even then, minor faults are hardly likely to be spotted, and indeed the web cannot be fully evaluated from edge to edge at a single glance. In addition to that, eyes tire very quickly under stress and consequently, the quality of inspection is reduced.
