The advantages of compact spinning for the processing of cotton have been discussed and outlined for many years. Today it is undisputed that, in comparison to the conventional ring spinning method, this process can produce a higher quality of yarn from a given raw material. The lower level of yarn hairiness and the increase in yarn strength above all play a major role here. In the case of man-made fibre yarns, this aspect becomes much less significant due to the higher level of yarn strength. Characteristics such as hairiness and the tendency towards "shifting" are, however, particularly important for the further processing of man-made fibre yarns. Yarn hairiness and a tendency towards clinging are directly correlated. In contrast to cotton, the high-tenacity man-made fibres which project from the yarn do not break off when clinging occurs, but create problems in the weft insertion. For this reason, the high potential offered by this processing method, e.g. in comparison to air-jet weaving machines, cannot be used to the full extent. The same applies to pilling in the final product. Here, there is a correlation between hairiness and pilling tendency. It is shown that compact spinning technology produces clear advantages with regard to the named criteria.
