Water Control System and Maintenance of Water Environment in Creek Region on the Ariake Coast

摘要

Today centralization of the water control system is promoted with intensive water utilization. However it is necessary to pay attention to the historical and geographical features of the water environments, to restore ecological and circulatory characteristics of water. It is also important to bring up various social groups at many levels in order to maintain these environments. The Ariake creek region has a unique environment where a symbiosis of human beings and water can be found. But a large farmland improvement project in the Chikugo river basin has recently led to the reorganization of the water system and creek networks. This has had profound influence on the region. We therefore try to investigate various functions and systems of existing traditional creeks and study their roles in the environmental conservation and principles of water control. It is expected that our findings may be applied to creation of new ecological spatial order and technique.
